Short answer: your CBSE Class 12 marksheet shows marks out of 500 if you took five subjects, or out of 600 if you took an additional sixth subject. Each subject is marked out of 100. What CBSE does not do is give you an official total or percentage. As the board restated in December 2023, it does not award an overall division, distinction or aggregate, so the "500 or 600" question really depends on who is calculating your percentage and why.

How CBSE Class 12 subjects are marked

• Every student takes five compulsory subjects, including at least one language. Many also take a sixth, additional subject.
• Each subject carries 100 marks, split between the theory paper and practicals, projects or internal assessment. Science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology are 70 theory plus 30 practical. Most other subjects are 80 theory plus 20 internal assessment.
• The marksheet lists marks and grades for every subject. It does not print an overall percentage.

What CBSE says about percentage

In a clarification reported in December 2023, CBSE pointed to its examination bye-laws, which say no overall division, distinction or aggregate is awarded in Class 10 or 12. The board also said it does not calculate or declare a percentage. If a college or employer needs one, they calculate it themselves, and if a student has more than five subjects, the institution decides which five count.

How to calculate your Class 12 percentage

• Five subjects: add the marks in all five and divide by 5. For example, 88 + 91 + 79 + 85 + 92 = 435, which gives 87%.
• Six subjects: most institutions use the best five, which usually means dropping your lowest subject other than the required language. Some count all six out of 600. Check the admission rules of the college or exam you are applying to.
• Some admissions use specific subjects only, such as Physics, Chemistry and Maths for engineering eligibility. The "best five" rule doesn't apply to those calculations.

And CBSE Class 10?

Why this matters before the exam

If your sixth subject is likely to be one of your best, it can lift a best-five percentage. If it is likely to be your weakest, it costs you nothing in a best-five calculation, but you still need to pass it. Either way, the main five subjects decide most admissions, so put your practice papers there first.

Yes, an additional subject can count in your CBSE Class 10 result, in two ways. If you fail Science, Maths or Social Science and pass your additional skill subject, the skill subject replaces the failed one and you are declared pass. And when a college or school calculates your percentage from the best five subjects, a high mark in the additional subject can take the place of a lower one. CBSE itself does not calculate an overall percentage.

What counts as an additional subject in Class 10

Every CBSE Class 10 student takes five main subjects: two languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Students can also register a sixth subject, which is usually either a skill subject, such as Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence or Computer Applications, or a third language. It must be registered with CBSE through your school; studying it informally does not count.

Rule 1: the additional subject can save a failed subject

• If you fail Science, Mathematics or Social Science and pass the skill subject taken as your sixth subject, the failed subject is replaced by the skill subject, and your result is worked out on that basis.
• A failed language can also be replaced, but only if Hindi or English remains among your passed languages in the first five.
• This only works if the subject was officially registered as your additional subject before the exam.

Rule 2: best five for percentage

CBSE's marksheet shows marks for every subject but no total percentage. CBSE has said that when a student has more than five subjects, the admitting institution or employer decides which five to count. Most schools and colleges take the best five, keeping at least one language.

For example, a student with English 86, Hindi 74, Maths 91, Science 88, Social Science 84 and Information Technology 95 would usually have Hindi dropped. That gives 86 + 91 + 88 + 84 + 95 = 444 out of 500, or 88.8%, instead of 84.6% from the five main subjects alone.

Should you take an additional subject?

• It is a useful safety net if you are worried about one of Maths, Science or Social Science.
• Skill subjects like IT and AI are often scoring, and they can lift a best-five percentage.
• It is extra work. If the sixth subject eats into revision time for your main five, the trade-off isn't worth it.
