CBSE 12th Total Marks: 500 or 600? How Marks and Percentage Work

Short answer: your CBSE Class 12 marksheet shows marks out of 500 if you took five subjects, or out of 600 if you took an additional sixth subject. Each subject is marked out of 100. What CBSE does not do is give you an official total or percentage. As the board restated in December 2023, it does not award an overall division, distinction or aggregate, so the "500 or 600" question really depends on who is calculating your percentage and why.

How CBSE Class 12 subjects are marked

• Every student takes five compulsory subjects, including at least one language. Many also take a sixth, additional subject.
• Each subject carries 100 marks, split between the theory paper and practicals, projects or internal assessment. Science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology are 70 theory plus 30 practical. Most other subjects are 80 theory plus 20 internal assessment.
• The marksheet lists marks and grades for every subject. It does not print an overall percentage.

What CBSE says about percentage

In a clarification reported in December 2023, CBSE pointed to its examination bye-laws, which say no overall division, distinction or aggregate is awarded in Class 10 or 12. The board also said it does not calculate or declare a percentage. If a college or employer needs one, they calculate it themselves, and if a student has more than five subjects, the institution decides which five count.

How to calculate your Class 12 percentage

• Five subjects: add the marks in all five and divide by 5. For example, 88 + 91 + 79 + 85 + 92 = 435, which gives 87%.
• Six subjects: most institutions use the best five, which usually means dropping your lowest subject other than the required language. Some count all six out of 600. Check the admission rules of the college or exam you are applying to.
• Some admissions use specific subjects only, such as Physics, Chemistry and Maths for engineering eligibility. The "best five" rule doesn't apply to those calculations.

And CBSE Class 10?

Why this matters before the exam

If your sixth subject is likely to be one of your best, it can lift a best-five percentage. If it is likely to be your weakest, it costs you nothing in a best-five calculation, but you still need to pass it. Either way, the main five subjects decide most admissions, so put your practice papers there first.
