The Maharashtra SSC paper pattern gives every subject 100 marks: 80 from the written paper and 20 from internal assessment, orals or practicals. The written 80 is one three-hour paper in the languages and two separate two-hour papers of 40 marks each in Maths, Science and Social Science. The board (MSBSHSE) has not published a fresh pattern document for 2027, and press reports of its announcement say the current syllabus continues for 2026-27, so the structure below, taken from the March 2026 papers, is the one to prepare for.

Six subjects, nine written papers: three of three hours and six of two hours, each two-hour paper worth 40 marks.

TL;DR

  • Each subject: 80 marks written, 20 internal. Pass is 35 of 100 in each subject, written and internal counted together.
  • Languages: one 80-mark paper, 11 AM to 2 PM. English written marks are split across reading, grammar and writing, with 20 marks for orals.
  • Maths: Algebra 40 and Geometry 40, two hours each. Science: Part 1 and Part 2, 40 each, two hours each, plus 20 for practicals.
  • Social Science: Paper 1 History and Political Science 40, Paper 2 Geography 40, two hours each.
  • SSC 2027 written exams: 15 February to 11 March 2027. Practicals and internals: 28 January to 13 February.

How is each Maharashtra SSC subject marked?

Every subject is out of 100. The written component is 80, and the remaining 20 comes from the school: oral tests in languages, practicals in Science, and internal assessment in Maths and Social Science. The board adds the two together, and you need 35 of the 100 to pass the subject. Careers360's pattern page carries the same 80 and 20 split for each subject.

The internal 20 is not a formality. A student with 30 in the written Maths papers and 18 in internals passes with 48; with 10 in internals the same student is at 40. Ask your school how the 20 is awarded in each subject.

Eighty written and twenty internal in every subject, with 35 of the combined 100 to pass.

Which subjects have two papers?

  • Mathematics: Part 1 Algebra (40 marks) and Part 2 Geometry (40 marks), on separate days.
  • Science and Technology: Part 1 (40 marks, physics and chemistry chapters) and Part 2 (40 marks, biology and environment chapters), on separate days.
  • Social Science: Paper 1 History and Political Science (40 marks) and Paper 2 Geography (40 marks), on separate days.

Each of these six papers is two hours, 11 AM to 1 PM in 2026. The three language papers are single 80-mark papers of three hours, 11 AM to 2 PM. So a student writing Marathi, English and Hindi sits nine written papers in all.

Maths, Science and Social Science are two 40-mark papers each; the languages are one 80-mark paper each.

What is the question pattern in Maths and Science?

Maths, each paper 40 marks

Both Algebra and Geometry follow the same eight-part structure: Q1(A) four MCQs for 4 marks, Q1(B) four one-mark questions, Q2(A) two of three activity questions for 4, Q2(B) four of five for 8, Q3(A) one of two activities for 3, Q3(B) two of four for 6, Q4 two of three for 8 and Q5 one of two for 3. That is 40 marks to attempt out of 60 on the paper. Only the first attempt at an MCQ is marked. Chapter-wise marks are in our Maths 1 Algebra weightage post.

Science, each paper 40 marks

Part 1 and Part 2 share a six-part structure: Q1(A) five MCQs for 5 marks, Q1(B) five one-mark questions, Q2(A) scientific reasons for 4, Q2(B) three of five for 6, Q3 five of eight for 15 and Q4 one of two for 5. Diagrams, numericals and the scientific-reasons question are where the step marks are. Our Science 1 weightage post has the chapter estimates.

Maths papers have eight parts and Science papers six, and in both you attempt 40 marks out of 60 on offer.

How are the language and Social Science papers set?

English (first and third language) is one 80-mark written paper. The split Careers360 reported for the 27 February 2026 paper was reading of textual passages 20, reading of non-textual passages 20, grammar 15 and writing skills 25, with 20 marks for the oral test. The writing section is the one that decides the grade: letters, reports, speeches and expansions of an idea carry the largest single block and are marked for format as much as for language.

The first language papers (Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and others) follow the same 80 written and 20 oral shape, with their own activity-sheet layout.

Social Science Paper 1 is History and Political Science for 40 marks in two hours. In the 16 March 2026 paper, questions 1 to 5 were History and questions 6 to 9 were Political Science. Paper 2 is Geography for 40 marks in two hours, with map work and the Brazil-India comparison chapters. Several portals print a History 28, Political Science 12 split; I have not seen that in a board document, so treat it as a guide to the question order rather than a rule.

Languages are single papers with writing as the biggest block; Social Science is two two-hour papers of 40.

When are the 2027 papers, and how long is each one?

The board's press note of 17 September 2026 fixed the SSC 2027 written exams for 15 February to 11 March 2027, with practicals, orals and internal assessment from 28 January to 13 February. The subject-wise time table is not out yet; in 2026 it came on 1 November. Our Maharashtra SSC time table 2027 post tracks it.

Expect the language papers first and the two-paper subjects later, as in 2026: English on 27 February, Algebra on 6 March, Geometry on 9 March, Science 1 on 11 March, Science 2 on 13 March, History on 16 March and Geography on 18 March. Three-hour papers ran 11 AM to 2 PM and two-hour papers 11 AM to 1 PM. The hall ticket carries the 2027 timings.

Written papers run 15 February to 11 March 2027; languages take three hours and the six 40-mark papers take two.

How to plan revision around the pattern

  1. Write every mock in the real format: 40-mark papers in two hours, 80-mark language papers in three. Practising a 40-mark paper with no clock hides the time pressure of Q3 and Q4.
  2. Prepare the two-paper subjects as six separate papers. Give Geometry and Science 2 their own days; they are the halves students leave for last.
  3. In languages, practise the writing section against a format checklist. Format marks are the cheapest marks in the paper.
  4. Collect the internal 20 in every subject. Ask your class teacher which activities and tests count and when they are due.
  5. After each mock, check where the step marks went, because Maharashtra examiners mark step by step. Our post on step marking in board exams shows how.

Gradehunt's Maharashtra SSC test series has papers for every subject in the board's own pattern, written by hand and checked by ex-examiners within 48 hours with step-wise marks and comments. The first paper is checked free, and mentorship plans are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.What is the Maharashtra SSC paper pattern for 2027?

Ans.

Each subject is 100 marks: 80 written and 20 internal. Languages are one three-hour paper of 80; Maths, Science and Social Science are two two-hour papers of 40 each. The board has not issued a new pattern document for 2027, and press reports of its announcement say the current syllabus continues for 2026-27, so the March 2026 structure is the one to prepare for.

Q2.How many papers are there in Maharashtra SSC?

Ans.

Nine written papers for a student with three languages: three language papers of 80 marks and six papers of 40 marks (Algebra, Geometry, Science 1, Science 2, History and Political Science, Geography). A student writing Marathi, English and Hindi, for instance, writes nine papers between 15 February and 11 March 2027.

Q3.What are the passing marks in Maharashtra SSC?

Ans.

35 out of 100 in each subject, counting the written paper and the internal 20 together. A student with 25 in the written Science paper and 12 in practicals has 37 and passes; with 8 in practicals the same student has 33 and does not.

Q4.How long is each Maharashtra SSC paper?

Ans.

Three hours for the language papers (11 AM to 2 PM in 2026) and two hours for each of the 40-mark papers in Maths, Science and Social Science (11 AM to 1 PM). Check your hall ticket for 2027, because the timing printed there is the one that applies.

Q5.How is the Maharashtra SSC English paper divided?

Ans.

The written 80 is split across reading of textual passages 20, non-textual passages 20, grammar 15 and writing skills 25, by the split reported for the February 2026 paper, with 20 marks for the oral test. Writing is the biggest block, so a student who leaves letters and reports to the last week gives up the easiest format marks.

Q6.Is the SSC Social Science paper one paper or two?

Ans.

Two. Paper 1 is History and Political Science for 40 marks and Paper 2 is Geography for 40 marks, each two hours on separate days, plus 20 marks of internal assessment. In the March 2026 History paper, questions 1 to 5 were History and 6 to 9 were Political Science.
