CS Professional elective subjects are two papers you choose yourself under ICSI's 2022 syllabus: Paper 4, Elective 1, in Group 1, from six options, and Paper 7, Elective 2, in Group 2, from five options. Both elective papers are open book. Choose each one on how much of it you already know, how heavy its update load is, how easy its material is to search in the hall, and the work you want after you qualify. The list below is from ICSI's Professional Programme page as it stood on 21 October 2026.
An elective is a 100-mark paper you pick. Pick the one where you start with marks already in hand, not the one a senior called scoring.
TL;DR
- Elective 1 (Paper 4): CSR and Social Governance, Internal and Forensic Audit, IPR, AI and Data Analytics and Cyber Security, Advanced Direct Tax, IFSCA.
- Elective 2 (Paper 7): Arbitration, Mediation and Conciliation; GST and Corporate Tax Planning; Labour Laws; Banking and Insurance; Insolvency and Bankruptcy.
- December 2026: Elective 2 on 27 December and Elective 1 on 28 December, as per the time table reported in the press.
- Tax electives carry the heaviest update load; CSR and Arbitration have the lightest.

ICSI has posted separate study material for 4.5 and 7.2 marked "for June 2027 exam onwards". If you sit in December 2026, use the current edition; from June 2027, switch to the new one.
Six choices for Elective 1 and five for Elective 2, and the two tax papers have a new edition from June 2027.
When are the elective papers in December 2026?
The December 2026 Professional papers run from 21 to 28 December, from 2 PM to 5:15 PM including 15 minutes of reading time, as per the ICSI time table reported in the press. Elective 2 is on 27 December and Elective 1 on 28 December, the last two days. The full paper-wise pattern is in our ICSI CS exam pattern guide.
The two electives close the December 2026 session on 27 and 28 December.
What should decide your elective choice?
I would weigh four things. The scores below are my own view of the common choices, out of 5, where 5 is most in your favour.
- Overlap with what you know: a commerce graduate with tax practice starts ahead in 4.5 and 7.2; a law graduate starts ahead in 7.1 and 7.5.
- Update load: tax papers change with every Finance Act and GST notification; arbitration and CSR change slowly.
- Bare-act size in the hall: open book helps only if the material is thin enough to search.
- Career fit: the work you want to do after qualifying.
How the common choices score
- 7.1 Arbitration, Mediation and Conciliation: overlap 3, update load 4, book size 4, career fit 3 for litigation and dispute roles.
- 7.2 GST and Corporate Tax Planning: overlap 4 for commerce students, update load 2, book size 2, career fit 4 for compliance and tax roles.
- 7.5 Insolvency and Bankruptcy: overlap 3 if Paper 6 is strong, update load 3, book size 3, career fit 4 for restructuring work.
- 4.1 CSR and Social Governance: overlap 3, update load 4, book size 4, career fit 3.
- 4.5 Advanced Direct Tax: overlap 4 for students with CA Inter tax, update load 2, book size 2, career fit 4.
No elective is easy. The one you can write 100 marks on with the least new material is the right one for you.
Which electives suit which careers?
If you want a listed-company secretarial role, IFSCA (4.6) and Banking and Insurance (7.4) add regulatory depth. For a practising CS doing tax and compliance, 4.5 and 7.2 fit. For insolvency work, 7.5 is closest to what an insolvency professional does, though that route also needs IBBI's own examination. For an HR or factory-heavy employer, Labour Laws (7.3) is the obvious pick.
Match the elective to the role you will apply for, then check it against the overlap score above.
How do you prepare an open-book elective?
- Get the ICSI study material for your exam session and read it once in full. Open book does not save a student who has never seen the chapter.
- Make a one-page index per chapter: key sections, case names, forms and time limits.
- Tab the bare act or the module at those pages, and use the same copy in every mock.
- Practise case-based answers: the provision, its application to the facts, a one-line conclusion.
- Solve ICSI's past papers and suggested answers, listed in our ICSI suggested answers post.
In elective answers I check, the weak ones copy a paragraph of the act and stop. The examiner wants the act applied to the company in the question.
Gradehunt's CS Professional test series has papers on the ICSI pattern, electives included, checked by ex-examiners within 48 hours with step-wise marks and comments on how each answer could score more. The first paper is checked free, and mentorship plans are available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1.How many elective papers are there in CS Professional?
Two. Paper 4 is Elective 1 in Group 1, with six options, and Paper 7 is Elective 2 in Group 2, with five options, under ICSI's 2022 syllabus. A student writing both groups in December 2026 sits both electives, on 27 and 28 December.
Q2.Are CS Professional elective papers open book?
Yes. Both elective papers are open book under the 2022 syllabus. The book helps only if you can find a provision in under a minute, so carry indexed, tabbed material you have already used in mocks rather than the full set of modules.
Q3.Which CS Professional elective is the most scoring?
None is scoring by itself. The elective where you already know the most scores best for you. A student with CA Inter tax behind them usually does better in Advanced Direct Tax than in IPR, while a law graduate may find Arbitration easier than GST.
Q4.When are the CS Professional elective papers in December 2026?
Elective 2 is on 27 December and Elective 1 on 28 December 2026, from 2 PM to 5:15 PM with 15 minutes of reading time, as per the time table reported in the press. They are the last two papers of the session, so a student writing both groups has five papers before them.
Q5.Which electives have new study material for June 2027?
Advanced Direct Tax Laws and Practice (4.5) and GST and Corporate Tax Planning (7.2). ICSI's Professional Programme page lists a separate edition of each for June 2027 exams onwards. December 2026 candidates use the current edition.
Q6.What are the passing marks for CS Professional electives?
40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate across all papers of the group, the same as other Professional papers. A student with 38 in an elective fails the group even if the aggregate crosses 50%.
