ISC Class 12 percentage calculation by best of four is simple: take your English mark, add your three highest marks from the other subjects, and divide the total by 4. A student with English 82 and best electives of 90, 88 and 86 has 346 out of 400, which is 86.5%. CISCE does not print this figure. Its result gives a mark and a grade for each subject, and colleges, scholarship forms and entrance exams each decide how to turn those marks into a percentage.
Best of four is one reading of your marksheet. The form you are filling in decides which reading counts.
TL;DR
- Best of four = (English + three best other subjects) / 4. English stays in even when it is your lowest mark.
- The ISC 2027 Regulations have no percentage or best-of-four rule. They set a pass mark of 35% in each subject.
- One PCM marksheet can read 76.5% by best of four but 73.6% on the IIT five-subject rule, which is below its 75% line.
- Read the form. Best of four, aggregate of all subjects and the IIT rule use different subjects.
Does CISCE calculate a percentage on the ISC result?
No. I read the ISC 2027 Regulations to check this. They describe a Pass Certificate cum Statement of Marks, grades from 1 to 9 for each subject and a pass grade for SUPW and Community Service, but no overall percentage and no best-of-four method.
Grades 1 to 6 mean a pass with credit, 7 and 8 a pass, and 9 a fail. Our ICSE and ISC grading system post explains the grades in more detail.
On admissions, the regulations only say that the Head of the School is responsible for a student's subject choice meeting university or professional requirements. Each college or exam then works out a percentage by its own rule.
CISCE gives marks and grades. Best of four is a convention used by schools and colleges.
How do you calculate the ISC best of four percentage?
- Write down your mark out of 100 in every subject from the statement of marks.
- Take English. It is compulsory, so it always counts.
- From the other subjects, pick the three highest marks.
- Add the four marks.
- Divide the total by 400 and multiply by 100, or simply divide by 4.
The ISC English subject has two components, English Language and Literature in English. Each has an 80-mark theory paper and 20 marks of project work. Use the single English figure from your statement of marks, not one paper on its own.
For Class 10 the method is best of five; our ICSE Class 10 percentage guide covers that version.
English plus your three strongest electives, out of 400, gives the best-of-four percentage.
What does best of four look like for Science, Commerce and Humanities?
The marks below are sample marks chosen to show the method, not real results. Under the regulations, ISC candidates take English with four or five electives, so best of four drops one or two subjects.
Science (PCB) with five subjects
- Marks: English 80, Physics 74, Chemistry 77, Biology 88, Physical Education 92.
- Best of four: 80 + 92 + 88 + 77 = 337, so 84.25%. Physics, at 74, drops out.
- All five subjects: 411 out of 500, so 82.2%.
- Physics, Chemistry and Biology together: 239 out of 300, so 79.67%.
Commerce with six subjects
- Marks: English 76, Accounts 88, Business Studies 85, Economics 79, Mathematics 58, Physical Education 90.
- Best of four: 76 + 90 + 88 + 85 = 339, so 84.75%. Economics and Mathematics both drop out.
- All six subjects: 476 out of 600, so 79.33%.
Humanities with five subjects
- Marks: English 82, History 86, Political Science 90, Sociology 88, Economics 74.
- Best of four: 82 + 90 + 88 + 86 = 346, so 86.5%.
- All five subjects: 420 out of 500, so 84.0%.

In the PCB and Humanities examples, with five subjects, best of four is 2 to 2.5 points above the all-subjects figure. With six subjects and one weak mark, as in the Commerce case, the gap grows to 5.4 points.
Why is the IIT percentage different from best of four?
Because the IIT rule picks its own five subjects. The JEE (Advanced) 2026 admission criteria ask for at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), or a place in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of your board in your category.
The five subjects are fixed: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, one language (the higher-scoring one if you took two), and the highest-scoring subject left over. Best of four plays no part in it. Take a PCM student with these sample marks:
- English 70, Physics 62, Chemistry 66, Mathematics 80, Computer Science 90.
- Best of four: 70 + 90 + 80 + 66 = 306, so 76.5%.
- All five subjects: 368 out of 500, so 73.6%.
- IIT five-subject aggregate: 62 + 66 + 80 + 70 + 90 = 368, so 73.6%. That misses the 75% line.

This student would write 76.5% on a form that asks for best of four and still fall short on the 75% route, so the top 20 percentile route is the one to check. Medical admission looks at a different set again, Physics, Chemistry and Biology together, and the NEET UG rules for your year set the minimum.
For a science student, the IIT figure uses Physics and Chemistry even when they are your weakest marks, so it can sit below your best of four.
Which ISC subjects count, and what is the pass mark?
English plus four or five electives, and 35% in each subject. The ISC 2027 Regulations set these rules:
- English or Modern English is compulsory, with four or five elective subjects. No candidate can take more than six.
- The pass mark in each subject is 35%.
- You qualify by reaching the pass standard in five or six subjects, English included, plus a pass grade in SUPW and Community Service from your school.
- Any candidate who sat the main exam, except those marked Absent, can take the Improvement Examination in up to two subjects, to clear a failed subject or to raise a mark.
Each elective is marked out of 100, theory plus practical or project work. The full subject list is on CISCE's ISC 2027 regulations and syllabus page.
Best of four does not change the 35% pass mark in each subject.
Which percentage should you write on a form?
Write the one the form describes. When it says best of four, use English plus three. When it says aggregate or all subjects, divide your full total by 500 or 600. For IIT admission, use the five-subject rule above. If the form gives no rule, I would ask the admission office before submitting.
A course that requires Mathematics or a science subject may set a minimum in that subject too, even when it falls outside your best four. So the 58 in Mathematics in the Commerce example still matters. Our ISC 2027 exam dates post can help you plan which papers need the most time.
Match the method to the form's wording, and keep your weakest required subject in view.
If you want more marks in your best four, practise with real board questions. Gradehunt's ISC Class 12 solved papers cover the last 10 ISC board exams, 2016 to 2026 (no exams were held in 2021), chapter-wise, with step-by-step solutions that show the marks for each step. They start at Rs 199 per subject, for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Accounts, Business Studies, Economics, English Language, English Literature, Computer Science and Physical Education.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1.Is English compulsory in ISC best of four?
Yes. English is always one of the four, even when it is your lowest mark. You add your three best marks from the other subjects to it. A student with English 70 and best electives of 90, 80 and 66 has 306 out of 400, which is 76.5%.
Q2.How do I calculate ISC percentage out of 400?
Add your English mark and your three best other subject marks, divide by 400 and multiply by 100. For example, 82 + 90 + 88 + 86 = 346, and 346 divided by 400 is 86.5%. Dividing the total by 4 gives the same answer.
Q3.Does CISCE give a percentage in the ISC result?
No. The ISC 2027 Regulations describe a statement of marks with a grade from 1 to 9 for each subject, and a pass grade for SUPW and Community Service. The percentage is calculated by the college or exam that asks for it.
Q4.Is the IIT 75% criterion calculated on best of four for ISC students?
No. The JEE (Advanced) 2026 criteria use Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, one language and the best remaining subject. In our sample, a student with 76.5% by best of four has 73.6% on that rule. If you miss 75%, check the top 20 percentile route.
Q5.What is the pass mark in ISC Class 12?
35% in each subject. To qualify you need the pass standard in five or six subjects, English included, and a pass grade in SUPW and Community Service. A student who scores 33 in one elective has not reached the pass mark in that subject.
Q6.Can Mathematics be left out of best of four in ISC Commerce?
Yes, if it is not among your three best electives. In our Commerce sample, Mathematics at 58 drops out and best of four is 84.75%. A course that requires Mathematics may still set a minimum in that subject, so prepare it properly.
Q7.Is Physical Education counted in the ISC percentage?
Yes, when it is one of your three highest electives. It is a full ISC elective marked out of 100. In our PCB sample, Physical Education at 92 is counted in best of four and Physics at 74 drops out.
