To calculate your ICSE Class 10 percentage, add your English marks to your four best marks from the other subjects, then divide the total by 5. This is the best-of-five method most schools and junior colleges use. CISCE itself does not print a percentage on the result. It gives marks and a grade for each subject and says whether you have qualified.

English is always one of the five, even when it is your lowest mark. The subject you drop is the lowest of the others.

TL;DR

  • Best of five = (English + best four other subjects) / 5.
  • English always counts. Drop the lowest of the remaining subjects.
  • Science and History, Civics and Geography each count as one subject.
  • Some forms ask for the overall percentage of all six subjects instead.
  • The pass mark is 33% in each subject.

Does CISCE give a percentage on the ICSE result?

No. The ICSE result sheet shows marks and a grade for each subject, a grade for SUPW and Community Service, and whether you qualified. The percentage is worked out by schools and colleges from those marks, which is why two forms can ask for it in two different ways.

Our ICSE grading system post explains the grades on the result sheet.

CISCE gives marks and grades, and the percentage is your own calculation.

How do you calculate the ICSE best of five percentage?

  1. Write down your marks out of 100 in every subject.
  2. Take English.
  3. From the other subjects, pick the four highest marks.
  4. Add the five marks.
  5. Divide the total by 500 and multiply by 100, which is the same as dividing by 5.

Most ICSE students write six subjects: English, a second language and History, Civics and Geography from Group I, two from Group II, and one from Group III. So best of five drops one subject.

Best of five is English plus your four strongest other subjects, out of 500.

What does it look like with real numbers?

Student A

English 88, Hindi 91, History, Civics and Geography 84, Mathematics 95, Science 89, Computer Applications 97.

  • English: 88.
  • Best four others: 97, 95, 91 and 89. History, Civics and Geography, at 84, is dropped.
  • Total: 88 + 97 + 95 + 91 + 89 = 460.
  • Percentage: 460 / 5 = 92%.

Student B, where English is the lowest

English 72, and the others are 90, 88, 85, 80 and 78.

  • English 72 stays in.
  • Best four others: 90, 88, 85 and 80. The 78 is dropped.
  • Total: 72 + 90 + 88 + 85 + 80 = 415, so 83%.

Student B might expect to drop English. That is the most common slip in this calculation, and it inflates the figure.

The worked examples give 92% and 83%, and in both English stays in.

How are Science and HCG marks counted?

Science has three papers: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. History, Civics and Geography has two. Each is one subject on the result, with one mark out of 100 that combines its papers. If your papers come to Physics 92, Chemistry 90 and Biology 85, the Science mark is the average: 267 / 3 = 89. Use the subject mark shown on the result, not the separate paper marks.

In Group I and Group II subjects, 80 marks come from the board paper and 20 from internal assessment in school. In Group III, the split is 50 and 50. All of it is already inside the subject mark.

Science and HCG each count once, as the combined mark on your result.

When do you need the overall percentage instead?

Some admission forms and scholarship forms ask for the percentage of all subjects. For Student A, that is 460 + 84 = 544 out of 600, or 90.67%. Read the form. If it says "aggregate of all subjects", use six. If it says "best of five", use five. When it does not say, ask the school or college office before you submit.

The overall percentage uses every subject out of 600, and it is usually a point or two lower than best of five.

What do you need to pass ICSE Class 10?

The pass mark is 33% in each subject. To get the pass certificate, you need to pass in at least five subjects including English, and get a pass grade in SUPW and Community Service from your school. Check the current rules in CISCE's regulations for your year.

Pass needs 33% in five subjects including English, plus a pass grade in SUPW.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.Is English compulsory in ICSE best of five?

Ans.

Yes. English is always one of the five subjects. You add your four best marks from the other subjects to it. A student with 72 in English still counts the 72.

Q2.How do I calculate ICSE percentage out of 500?

Ans.

Add English and your four best other subject marks, then divide by 500 and multiply by 100. A total of 460 gives 92%.

Q3.Is the ICSE percentage calculated by CISCE?

Ans.

No. CISCE gives subject marks and grades and says whether you qualified. Schools and colleges calculate the percentage, usually by best of five.

Q4.How is the ICSE Science mark calculated?

Ans.

Science combines Physics, Chemistry and Biology into one subject mark. If the papers are 92, 90 and 85, the Science mark is their average, 89.

Q5.What is the passing mark in ICSE Class 10?

Ans.

33% in each subject. You need to pass five subjects including English and get a pass grade in SUPW and Community Service.

Q6.Should I use best of five or overall percentage on a form?

Ans.

Use whatever the form asks for. If it says aggregate of all subjects, divide by 600. If it says best of five, divide by 500. If it is not clear, ask the admission office.
