The ICSE Class 10 Maths paper for 2027 is an 80-mark paper of three hours, plus 15 minutes of reading time. Section A has 40 marks and every question is compulsory. Section B has seven questions of 10 marks each, and you answer any four. The other 20 marks of the subject come from internal assessment in school. I took these details from CISCE's ICSE 2027 specimen paper and its draft marking scheme.
The specimen says it plainly: leaving out essential working loses marks. In this paper the steps carry marks of their own, so a bare final answer leaves marks on the page.
TL;DR
- 80 marks, three hours of writing plus 15 minutes of reading. Some sites still say 2.5 hours, but the 2026 and 2027 specimens both say three hours.
- Section A, 40 marks, compulsory: Question 1 has 15 one-mark MCQs; Questions 2 and 3 carry 12 and 13 marks.
- Section B, 40 marks: any four of Questions 4 to 10, 10 marks each.
- All working, including rough work, goes on the same sheet as the answer.
- CISCE has not released the 2027 timetable yet.
What is the ICSE Class 10 Maths paper pattern for 2027?
The 2027 specimen, paper code 511, sets out the structure like this:
- Question 1, 15 marks: 15 multiple-choice questions of one mark each, including assertion-reason items. You write only the answer, not the question.
- Question 2, 12 marks: three parts of 4 marks each.
- Question 3, 13 marks: two parts of 4 marks and one of 5. In the specimen the 5-mark part is a graph question.
- Questions 4 to 10, 10 marks each: you pick four. Most are split 3, 3 and 4 marks; Question 9 in the specimen has two 5-mark parts, one of them an ogive.
CISCE's note on the specimen says the board paper keeps the same format, though questions can come from any part of the syllabus. Each question in the 2027 specimen also carries a tag such as Application or Analysis and Evaluation, which shows the skill it tests. Our ICSE Class 10 Maths syllabus post lists the chapters.
Forty compulsory marks in Section A, then four of seven 10-mark questions in Section B.
How long is the ICSE Class 10 Maths exam?
Three hours, plus 15 minutes at the start when you may read but not write. Both the 2026 and the 2027 specimens give three hours. Several sites still quote two and a half hours from older papers, so go by the specimen you download from cisce.org.
The writing time is three hours. The reading time comes before it.
How does the marking scheme give marks?
The draft marking scheme that comes with the specimen shows each step of the solution, and the paper's instructions say that leaving out essential working costs marks. Two examples from the specimen show where students lose marks they had earned.
Rounding as asked
Question 2(ii) asks you to solve (x − 2)² + 11x − 7 = 0 correct to three significant figures. It reduces to x² + 7x − 3 = 0, and the scheme gives x = 0.405 and x = −7.41. A student who writes 0.41 and −7.4 has done the hard part and still not given the answer asked for.
Nearest whole number
Question 2(i) has a cone of radius 7 cm and height 28 cm reshaped into a cylinder of radius 14 cm. The height works out to 7/3 cm, which is 2.33, and the question asks for the nearest whole number, so the answer is 2 cm. Writing 2.33 as the final answer ignores the instruction.
The final step must match what the question asks for: significant figures, a whole number, or the right unit.
How should you split the three hours?
Three hours for 80 marks is 2.25 minutes a mark. My split for a student who is steady in all chapters:
- Reading time: choose your four Section B questions before you start writing.
- Section A: about 80 minutes. The MCQs should take 20 to 25 of them.
- Section B: about 22 minutes for each of the four questions, close to 90 minutes in all.
- Last 10 minutes: check rounding, units and the graph scale.
Students often spend too long on Question 1 because each MCQ is only one mark and feels quick. Keep a watch and move on after 25 minutes.
About 80 minutes on Section A, 90 on Section B and 10 to check.
How do you choose four questions in Section B?
- Read all seven during the reading time and mark each one as sure, likely or avoid.
- Pick questions where you are sure of all three parts, not just the first.
- Prefer a graph or construction question if you have practised them. They follow a fixed method and rarely hold surprises.
- Answer your strongest question first, and write the question number clearly in the margin.
For constructions, the specimen asks you to use ruler and compass. Leave the arcs visible, because they are your working.
Choose during the reading time, and only take a question when all of its parts look familiar.
Which mistakes cost the most marks?
- Working done on a separate rough page instead of next to the answer.
- A graph drawn to your own scale when the question gives one.
- Answering five questions in Section B. Only four are needed, and the time comes out of the others.
- Losing the minus sign or the unit in the last line.
Past papers are the best way to practise this pattern. Our ICSE Class 10 Maths past papers page has earlier years with solutions. Frequently Asked Questions
Q1.How many marks is the ICSE Class 10 Maths paper?
The written paper is 80 marks, and the remaining 20 come from internal assessment in school, making 100. Section A and Section B carry 40 marks each in the 2027 specimen.
Q2.Is the ICSE Maths exam 2.5 hours or 3 hours?
Three hours of writing, plus 15 minutes of reading time. Both the 2026 and 2027 CISCE specimens say three hours, so a student timing a mock at two and a half hours is practising for the wrong paper.
Q3.How many questions do we have to attempt in Section B?
Any four of the seven questions, Questions 4 to 10, each worth 10 marks. Section A is fully compulsory. A student who attempts five in Section B gets no extra credit and loses time.
Q4.How many MCQs are there in ICSE Class 10 Maths?
Question 1 has 15 MCQs of one mark each in the 2027 specimen, including assertion-reason items. The instructions say to write only the correct answer, not to copy the question.
Q5.Do we get marks for method in ICSE Maths even if the answer is wrong?
Usually, yes. The paper warns that leaving out essential working loses marks, and the marking scheme sets out each step. A student who sets up the equation correctly but slips in the last line is likely to keep marks for the method.
Q6.Are mathematical tables allowed in the ICSE Maths exam?
Yes. The specimen's instructions say mathematical tables are provided in the exam. Practise using them during mocks so you are not looking up a table for the first time in March.
