The CS Professional exam pattern under Syllabus 2022 is seven written papers of 100 marks and 3 hours each: four in Group 1 (400 marks) and three in Group 2 (300 marks). We read the June 2026 papers for the five compulsory subjects and two electives. Each had six questions marked "Answer ALL", with an alternative on only two.
In each June 2026 paper, 60 to 70 marks came with no choice at all, so a skipped chapter costs more here than most students expect.
TL;DR
- 7 papers of 100 marks, 3 hours each; the two electives are open book.
- No MCQ or OMR paper. June 2026 papers had 6 compulsory questions each, with an alternative on two.
- Pass: 40 in each paper plus 200 of 400 (Group 1) or 150 of 300 (Group 2). Score 60 in a paper of a failed group, with 25 in the others, and it is exempted automatically.
- From June 2024 to June 2026, Professional pass rates ran from 25.03% to 32.69% per group, about double Executive Group 1.
What is the CS Professional exam pattern under Syllabus 2022?
ICSI lists the Professional Programme papers with these codes:
- Group 1: Paper 1, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Principles and Practice (531); Paper 2, Drafting, Pleadings and Appearances (532); Paper 3, Compliance Management, Audit and Due Diligence (533); Paper 4, Elective 1, one of six subjects (541 to 546).
- Group 2: Paper 5, Strategic Management and Corporate Finance (535); Paper 6, Corporate Restructuring, Valuation and Insolvency (536); Paper 7, Elective 2, one of five subjects (551 to 555).
Some websites still show "50 questions of 2 marks each" for CS Professional. No June 2026 paper looked like that. The December 2026 exams run from 21 to 28 December in the afternoon; our CS Professional December 2026 time table post has the paper-wise dates.
Seven descriptive papers worth 400 and 300 marks by group, with open-book electives.
How did ICSI set each CS Professional paper in June 2026?
We read each June 2026 paper from ICSI's previous-session question papers. All seven covers said 3 hours, 100 marks, 6 questions, answer all. Below, "fixed" means marks with no alternative question.
- Paper 1, ESG (531): three parts of 65, 20 and 15 marks. Choice on Q4 and Q5 (35 marks); 65 marks fixed.
- Paper 2, Drafting (532): two parts of 70 and 30. Choice on Q4 and Q6 (30 marks); 70 marks fixed.
- Paper 3, Compliance Management, Audit and Due Diligence (533): two parts of 40 and 60. Choice on Q2 and Q6 (35 marks); 65 marks fixed.
- Paper 4.5, Advanced Direct Tax Laws (545), open book: no parts. Choice on Q4 and Q6 (30 marks); 70 marks fixed.
- Paper 5, Strategic Management and Corporate Finance (535): two parts of 40 and 60. Choice on Q2 and Q6 (35 marks); 65 marks fixed.
- Paper 6, Corporate Restructuring, Valuation and Insolvency (536): three parts of 40, 20 and 40. Choice on Q2 and Q6 (40 marks); 60 marks fixed.
- Paper 7.2, GST and Corporate Tax Planning (552), open book: two parts of 70 and 30. Choice on Q4 and Q6 (30 marks); 70 marks fixed.

The choice is narrow, and I would plan around that. It is always one whole question against an alternative of equal marks, such as Q4 or 4A, never "answer any four of six". Question 1 in ESG, Drafting, Paper 6 and the GST elective was one long case with four or five parts of 5 marks each.
June 2026 papers left 30 to 40 marks to choice and fixed the remaining 60 to 70.
What are the passing marks for CS Professional?
You need two things in the same sitting: at least 40% in each paper of a group, and at least 50% of that group's total.
- Group 1: 40 in each of the four papers and 200 out of 400.
- Group 2: 40 in each of the three papers and 150 out of 300.
For a rank, ICSI's examination FAQ requires passing all papers of the stage in one attempt with no exemption claimed. Ranks 11 to 25 also need 55% in aggregate.
The pass rule is 40 per paper and 50% per group, and a rank needs a clean single attempt.
How does the 60% exemption work at Professional level?
Fail a group after writing all its papers, with 60 or more in one and at least 25 in each of the others, and ICSI exempts you from that paper in later attempts. Its notice for the June 2026 session says these exemptions are automatic, and you can ask for cancellation on the SMASH portal by the session's cut-off date.
ICSI's exemption rules leave the exempted paper out of the next result. You then need 40 in each paper you still write and 50% of those papers' total.
A worked example with Group 2 marks
- A Group 2 student scores 64 in Paper 5, 37 in Paper 6 and 55 in the GST elective.
- The total of 156 clears 150, but 37 is below 40, so the group is failed.
- 64 is above 60 and the other two are above 25, so Paper 5 is exempted. Next time the student writes only Papers 6 and 7, and needs 40 in each plus 100 out of 200.
- Scores of 45 and 52 clear 40 in both papers but total 97. The group is failed again by 3 marks.
With the exemption cancelled, the same student writing all three papers with 60, 45 and 52 has 157 and passes. If the exempted paper is your strongest, I would do this sum before keeping it. Exemptions for ICMAI Final or LL.B. (50%) holders are different: you apply for them, as our CS Executive passing marks guide explains.
A 60 gets you an automatic exemption, but the remaining papers must then reach 50% on their own.
How many students pass CS Professional each session?
ICSI's Syllabus 2022 pass percentages, Group 1 and Group 2, Professional against Executive:
- June 2024: Professional 27.04% and 26.72%. Executive 8.15% and 20.87%.
- December 2024: Professional 30.40% and 31.39%. Executive 15.91% and 19.74%.
- June 2025: Professional 25.03% and 26.22%. Executive 14.57% and 24.82%.
- December 2025: Professional 26.73% and 26.67%. Executive 18.03% and 22.26%.
- June 2026: Professional 32.69% and 29.49%. Executive 17.41% and 22.19%.
Source: ICSI result figures for Syllabus 2022, compiled in Gradehunt's CS pass percentage tracker; comparison and averages by Gradehunt.
On a simple average of the five sessions, Professional comes to 28.38% (Group 1) and 28.10% (Group 2), against 14.81% and 21.98% at Executive. The two Professional groups were within 1.2 points of each other in four of the five sessions. Still, about 7 in 10 candidates who write a Professional group don't clear it in that sitting.
Under Syllabus 2022, Professional pass rates stayed between 25% and 33% per group.
How would I prepare for this pattern?
- Sit two full papers per subject at 2:00 pm, with 15 minutes of reading time first.
- Cover the whole syllabus. Only two questions have an alternative, so a skipped chapter can still turn up in a compulsory one.
- For the open-book electives, make a one-page index of sections and forms. Our post on choosing CS Professional electives compares the subjects.
- Mark your attempts against ICSI's guideline answers, part by part.
Write full papers to time, leave no part unread, and mark yourself against ICSI's own answers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1.How many papers are there in CS Professional?
Seven under Syllabus 2022: four in Group 1 and three in Group 2, each of 100 marks. Papers 4 and 7 are electives, where you pick one subject from six and from five.
Q2.Is there MCQ or negative marking in CS Professional?
No. CS Professional papers need written answers. Each of the seven June 2026 papers we read had six descriptive questions and no OMR section. Lists showing 50 two-mark questions do not match ICSI's papers.
Q3.What are the passing marks for CS Professional?
40 in each paper and 50% of the group total, in the same sitting. That is 200 out of 400 in Group 1 and 150 out of 300 in Group 2. A Group 1 student with 80, 75, 60 and 38 has 253, well above 200, and still fails because of the 38.
Q4.Are CS Professional elective papers open book?
Yes. The June 2026 papers for Advanced Direct Tax Laws and GST and Corporate Tax Planning both carry "Open Book Examination" on the first page. They still have six questions in three hours, so you need an index to find provisions quickly.
Q5.How do I get exemption in a CS Professional paper?
Write all papers of the group, score 60 or more in one and at least 25 in the others, and fail the group. ICSI grants the exemption automatically, and you can cancel it on SMASH before the cut-off. Next time you need 40 in each remaining paper and 50% of their total.
Q6.What was the CS Professional pass percentage in June 2026?
32.69% in Group 1 and 29.49% in Group 2 under Syllabus 2022, per ICSI's results. Across the five Syllabus 2022 sessions from June 2024, the Professional figures stayed between 25.03% and 32.69%, while Executive Group 1 ranged from 8.15% to 18.03%.
Q7.Is there any choice in CS Professional question papers?
Only a little. In June 2026 every paper offered alternatives on two of its six questions, worth 30 to 40 marks. The other 60 to 70 marks had no choice, so a student who skips a chapter may face a compulsory 5-mark part on it.
