CA Final Audit answer writing comes down to one habit: in every case study, name the Standard on Auditing or the rule, apply it to the facts in the question, and end with what the auditor should do. Paper 3, Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics, is on Friday 6 November 2026, from 2 pm to 5 pm. It is a 100-mark paper with case-scenario MCQs for 30 marks and descriptive questions for 70, so the written part decides most of your score.

An audit answer that explains an SA well but never says what the auditor does next has not answered the case. The conclusion is where the marks sit.

TL;DR

  • Paper 3: Friday 6 November 2026, 2 pm to 5 pm, 100 marks.
  • 30 marks of case-scenario MCQs, 70 marks of descriptive questions. Confirm the format on your latest ICAI MTP.
  • Write each case answer in four steps: the SA or rule, the relevant facts, the application, the auditor's conclusion.
  • Show the numbers when the case has them. Materiality questions often turn on an aggregate.
  • For Nov 2026, use the study material and the academic update listed in ICAI's Board of Studies notice.

How is the CA Final Audit paper set?

The MCQs come in sets built around short case scenarios, and the descriptive part has longer cases where you write the answer in full. ICAI's Board of Studies lists the study material edition and the academic update that apply to the November 2026 attempt. Check that list before you revise, so you read the right version.

For last-week revision, ICAI's Saransh for this paper condenses the study material into short charts. I would use it to revise SAs, not to learn them for the first time.

Thirty marks are MCQs and seventy are written, so practise both, but spend most of your writing practice on the descriptive cases.

What structure should a case study answer follow?

  1. Name the SA, section or clause that governs the situation, and state its requirement in two or three lines.
  2. Pick out the facts in the case that the requirement turns on: amounts, dates, who did what.
  3. Apply the requirement to those facts, one point at a time, with any working shown.
  4. Conclude with the auditor's action: what to ask management, what to tell those charged with governance, and the effect on the report.

Headings such as 'Relevant SA', 'Analysis' and 'Conclusion' help the examiner find each part. Keep the SA part short. The examiner already knows the standard and is checking whether you can use it.

SA, facts, application, conclusion: four steps in the same order every time.

How do you answer a materiality case with numbers?

Worked example: SA 450

Case: the auditor of PQR Ltd sets materiality for the financial statements at Rs 10 lakh. During the audit two misstatements come up: closing inventory overstated by Rs 6 lakh, and an expense of Rs 5 lakh not recorded. Management says each is below materiality and refuses to correct either. Comment.

Answer: SA 450 requires the auditor to accumulate misstatements other than clearly trivial ones, ask management to correct them, and judge whether the uncorrected misstatements are material individually or in aggregate. Each is below Rs 10 lakh, but together they come to Rs 11 lakh, which is above materiality. Both overstate profit, so they do not offset. The auditor communicates the uncorrected misstatements to those charged with governance. If management still refuses, the financial statements are materially misstated. The misstatement is confined to two items, so it is material but not pervasive, and under SA 705 the auditor gives a qualified opinion.

Now change one number. If the unrecorded expense were Rs 3 lakh, the aggregate is Rs 9 lakh, below materiality, and the opinion can stay unmodified. The auditor still communicates the uncorrected items and obtains a written representation from management that it believes their effect is immaterial. A student who skips the addition cannot tell these two cases apart, and that is the mistake I see most in checked copies.

Add up the misstatements before you decide, and say which way the total goes.

What if management refuses an external confirmation?

Worked example: SA 505

Case: management of a company does not allow the auditor to send a confirmation request to its largest debtor, saying the customer relationship is sensitive.

Answer: under SA 505, the auditor asks management why, and looks for evidence that the reason is valid and reasonable. The auditor then considers what the refusal means for the assessed risks, including the risk of fraud, and performs alternative procedures, such as checking receipts after the year end and the shipping documents behind the balance. If the reason is unreasonable, or the alternative procedures do not give enough evidence, the auditor communicates with those charged with governance under SA 260 and decides the effect on the opinion under SA 705.

Every refusal answer needs the same chain: ask why, assess risk, try alternatives, then report.

How should you write professional ethics answers?

Ethics cases test whether a member's act is misconduct under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 and its Schedules. Write the rule as a plain sentence, then apply it. If you are certain of the Schedule and clause number, quote it. If you are not, describe the rule correctly and skip the number. A wrong clause number spoils an answer whose reasoning was right.

End each ethics answer with a clear verdict: guilty of professional misconduct, or not guilty, with the reason in one line.

How should you split the three hours?

This is my own split, not an ICAI rule:

  • MCQs: about 45 minutes. Read the scenario once, then the questions, then go back to the scenario only for the detail each question needs.
  • Descriptive questions: about 2 hours. That is roughly 1.7 minutes a mark, so give each question time in proportion to its marks.
  • Last 15 minutes: check that every case ends with a conclusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.When is the CA Final Audit paper in November 2026?

Ans.

On Friday 6 November 2026, from 2 pm to 5 pm. It is Paper 3, the last paper of Group I, after Financial Reporting on 2 November and AFM on 4 November. Check your admit card for the reporting time.

Q2.How many marks are MCQs in CA Final Audit?

Ans.

30 marks are case-scenario MCQs and 70 are descriptive. Look at the latest ICAI MTP for this paper to confirm the format before the exam. A student strong in MCQs still needs the written part to pass.

Q3.Should I write SA numbers in CA Final Audit answers?

Ans.

Yes, when you are sure of them. Quoting SA 450 or SA 505 correctly shows the examiner where the rule comes from. If you are unsure, describe the requirement clearly instead of writing a wrong number.

Q4.How much time should I give each descriptive audit question?

Ans.

About 1.7 minutes a mark, if you keep 45 minutes for the MCQs. A 10-mark case then gets about 17 minutes. Keep the SA part to three or four lines and spend the rest on the facts and the conclusion.

Q5.Which study material applies for CA Final Audit November 2026?

Ans.

The edition and academic update listed in ICAI's Board of Studies notice for the November 2026 Final exam. Download the list from the BOS site and check your copy against it before revising.

Q6.Is writing headings in audit answers useful?

Ans.

Yes. Short headings such as Relevant SA, Analysis and Conclusion let the examiner find each part quickly. A student who writes one long paragraph often hides a correct conclusion in the middle of it.
