There are three CMA Final elective subjects under Syllabus 2022, and you write one of them as Paper 20: 20A Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation, 20B Risk Management in Banking and Insurance, or 20C Entrepreneurship and Start-up. Pick 20A if you are comfortable with numbers and like valuation, 20B if you have passed CS or work around banks and insurers, and 20C if you would rather write than calculate. ICMAI asks for your choice when you enrol for Final, and lets you change it later for Rs 1,000.
Choose the elective that shares the most syllabus with the Final papers you have to write anyway. Every shared topic is study time you do not spend twice.
TL;DR
- 20A splits 50:50 between performance management and valuation and repeats named topics from four core papers: SCM, SFM, CFR and CEL.
- 20B is 60% banking and 40% insurance. A CS-qualified student can get it exempted for Rs 1,000.
- 20C has eight sections and 67 listed topics, the widest syllabus of the three, with the least overlap with core papers.
- All three June 2026 papers had 30 marks of MCQs and five 14-mark questions out of seven.
What are the CMA Final elective subjects?
Paper 20 is the eighth Final paper and sits in Group IV with Papers 17, 18 and 19. Each elective is a 3-hour, 100-mark paper. In the December 2026 term, ICMAI has put all three electives on Thursday 17 December, from 10 AM to 1 PM, as the last Final paper. Our December 2026 timetable post has the other dates.
For eligibility, fees and all 20 papers, see our CMA course details post.
You write one elective out of three, as part of Group IV, and in December 2026 it is the paper on 17 December.
How is each elective's syllabus weighted?
ICMAI prints a weightage against every section and module, and its CMA prospectus says this shows the approximate share of marks in any one exam. I also counted the modules and numbered topics in each syllabus.
20A Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation
- 2 sections (50% performance management, 50% valuation), 9 modules, 50 numbered topics.
- Heaviest modules at 15% each: performance measurement tools, enterprise risk management, valuation of assets and liabilities, and valuation in mergers and acquisitions.
20B Risk Management in Banking and Insurance
- 2 sections (60% banking, 40% insurance), 8 modules, 39 numbered topics.
- Five modules carry 15% each: interest rate and market risk, credit and liquidity risk, operational and off-balance sheet risk, insurance intermediaries and products, and managing risk in insurance.
20C Entrepreneurship and Start-up
- 8 sections, one module each, 67 numbered topics.
- Sections A to D (skill sets, ecosystem, idea to action, value addition) carry 15% each. Sections E to H (scale up, risk strategies, leadership, new age business) carry 10% each.
Source: ICMAI Syllabus 2022 Paper 20A, 20B and 20C syllabi and the CMA prospectus. Modules and numbered topics (1.1, 1.2 and so on) counted by Gradehunt.
20B has the fewest topics, 39, against 67 for 20C, where each topic carries fewer marks and no section is safe to skip.
Which core Final papers does each elective build on?
I matched the topic names in each elective's syllabus against the syllabi of Papers 13 to 19. A match means the same named topic appears in both; the exam questions still differ.
20A: four core papers
- Strategic Cost Management (Paper 16): total quality management, lean, Six Sigma, benchmarking, supply chain management and pricing decisions, all six also in 20A's first three modules.
- Strategic Financial Management (Paper 14): equity valuation by discounted cash flow and relative valuation, the methods in 20A Module 7.
- Corporate Financial Reporting (Paper 18): valuation of shares and goodwill, EVA and MVA, and business combinations, matching 20A Modules 8 and 9.
- Corporate and Economic Laws (Paper 13): the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and amalgamations, which return in 20A's valuation law module.
20B: three core papers
- SFM's financial risk management section has derivatives, swaps and hedging, which 20B uses for interest rate and market risk.
- CEL has separate modules on banking sector laws and insurance sector laws.
- CFR has provisioning norms for NBFCs, close to 20B's chapter on bank NPAs.
- Basel norms, value at risk and credit risk models appear in no core Final syllabus. Those are new reading.
20C: two core papers
- CEL covers company incorporation and the MSME sector provisions.
- SCM has an introduction to data analytics tools.
- Funding, crowdfunding, design thinking, intellectual property and start-up valuation have no named match in the core papers.
Method: Paper 20 topic names searched in the Paper 13 to 19 syllabi in ICMAI's Syllabus 2022 prospectus, each match checked by Gradehunt.
20A repeats the most named topics from papers you already study, 20B repeats some of SFM and CEL, and 20C is mostly new material.
What did the June 2026 elective papers look like?
I read all three June 2026 papers on ICMAI's question paper page. The structure was the same in each.
- Section A: Question 1, compulsory. Ten MCQs of 2 marks each, then a case scenario with five more MCQs of 2 marks, 30 marks in all.
- Section B: any five of Questions 2 to 8, 14 marks each, 70 marks.
The difference is how much you calculate. I sorted every Section B part by whether it asked you to compute a figure:
- 20A: 10 of 14 parts, including an Altman Z-score, EVA for two years, a merger exchange ratio and the profit-maximising output from a demand function.
- 20B: 2 of 14 parts, a bank's liquidity coverage ratio and its total NPAs. The rest asked you to explain a case or a statement.
- 20C: 1 of 13 parts, a working capital estimate for a bank loan. The rest was theory, such as the steps in design thinking.
Source: ICMAI June 2026 question papers for 20A, 20B and 20C, Section B parts counted by Gradehunt.
Each June 2026 elective had 30 marks of MCQs and 70 of written answers. 20A was mostly sums, 20C almost all theory.
Which elective should you choose?
Choose 20A if
You are strong in SFM and CFR and want to work in valuation, FP&A or deals. Your SCM and CFR revision also counts towards 20A.
Choose 20B if
You have passed CS. ICMAI's reciprocal scheme with ICSI exempts a CS-qualified candidate from Paper 20B on application, at Rs 1,000 a paper, so you may not write the elective at all. Our CMA Final exemption post explains how to apply. 20B also fits anyone working in, or aiming for, a bank, NBFC or insurer.
Choose 20C if
You write well-structured theory answers and you are interested in running a business, a family firm or a start-up. My caution: with 67 topics and little core-paper overlap, 20C needs its own reading time from day one.
Match the elective to your strengths and plans: 20A for numbers and valuation, 20B for CS-qualified students and banking, 20C for writers and founders.
Can you change your CMA Final elective later?
Yes. ICMAI's Syllabus 2022 curriculum calls the choice a one-time option made at enrolment. On 5 September 2024, the Council approved a change facility, and a notification of 25 November 2024 set the fee at Rs 1,000, which includes study material for the new elective. A revised notification of 18 December 2024 says you apply online only, through the eICMAI student portal.
Neither notice gives a cut-off date. The December 2026 exam forms closed on 17 October 2026. If you apply now, ask ICMAI's Directorate of Studies which term the change applies to.
You can switch electives for Rs 1,000 through eICMAI, but first check which exam term the change covers.
How do you make the choice?
- Write down your mock scores in SFM, SCM, CFR and CEL.
- Mark the topics in each elective's module list that you have already studied.
- Attempt Question 1 of the June 2026 paper for each elective in 54 minutes: 30 marks at 1.8 minutes a mark, the pace of a 3-hour, 100-mark paper.
- Pick the elective with the most familiar topics and the best Question 1 score.
Gradehunt's CMA Final test series covers the elective you pick when you enrol. You write each paper by hand and upload it, and CMA professionals return it checked within 48 hours, with marks and comments on every answer. Your first paper is checked free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1.Which is the easiest elective in CMA Final?
ICMAI does not rank them, and no elective is easy by design. 20B has the fewest listed topics, 39. 20C is mostly theory (one 7-mark sum in June 2026) but has 67 topics to cover. A student strong in SFM and CFR usually finds 20A familiar, because many of its topics repeat from those papers.
Q2.Can I change my CMA Final elective after enrolment?
Yes, for a fee of Rs 1,000, which includes study material for the new paper. ICMAI's notifications of 25 November and 18 December 2024 say you apply online through the eICMAI student portal. Before you switch, confirm which exam term the change applies to.
Q3.Which CMA Final elective has an exemption for CS?
Paper 20B, Risk Management in Banking and Insurance. Under ICMAI's reciprocal scheme of 24 April 2023, a candidate who has passed CS can apply for exemption from Paper 20B at Rs 1,000. The exemption helps only if 20B is your elective.
Q4.How many marks do I need to pass the CMA Final elective?
At least 40 out of 100 in the elective, and 50% of the total marks of Group IV. A student with 45 in the elective still needs strong marks in CMAD, CFR and ITLP so the group reaches 200 out of 400.
Q5.When is the CMA Final elective paper in December 2026?
On Thursday 17 December 2026, from 10 AM to 1 PM IST. It is the last Final paper of the term, and all three electives are on the same day.
Q6.Is the CMA Final elective paper objective or descriptive?
Both. In June 2026, each elective had 30 marks of MCQs in Question 1, including five MCQs on a case scenario, and 70 marks of descriptive answers: any five of Questions 2 to 8, at 14 marks each.
