The CA Foundation Accounts mistakes that cost the most marks are format mistakes, not concept gaps. A journal entry without a narration, closing stock shown on one side only, share forfeiture credited with the wrong amount, a ledger that never gets balanced. Paper 1, Accounting, is on Sunday 3 January 2027 from 2 PM to 5 PM, so you have about nine weeks to fix these habits.

In Accounts the format is part of the answer. A correct figure in the wrong place still loses marks.

TL;DR

  • Paper 1 Accounting: 3 January 2027, 2 PM to 5 PM, 100 marks.
  • Write a narration under every journal entry and keep debit above credit.
  • Closing stock given as an adjustment goes to both the Trading Account and the Balance Sheet.
  • On forfeiture, debit Share Capital with the called-up amount, not the face value.
  • Practise formats from ICAI's mock test papers and get at least one full paper checked.

When is CA Foundation Paper 1 in January 2027?

ICAI's January 2027 schedule puts Paper 1, Accounting, first: Sunday 3 January, 2 PM to 5 PM. It is a 100-mark written paper. To pass the Foundation you need 40 marks in each paper and 50% of the total of all four papers, so a weak Accounts score drags the aggregate even when you clear the paper.

Our CA Foundation exam dates post has the full timetable and the exam form dates.

Accounts opens the attempt on 3 January, and you need 40 in it plus 50% overall.

What goes wrong in journal entries?

No narration

Every entry needs a short narration in brackets: (Being goods sold to Ravi on credit). Students skip it to save time. On a 10-mark question with eight entries, that is a small loss on each line, and it adds up.

Debit and credit out of order

The debit line comes first with "Dr." at the end. The credit line comes below it, starts with "To" and is indented. When I check Foundation copies, I often see both lines written flush left with no "Dr." or "To", so the reader has to guess which side you meant.

Compound entries split into many

If one transaction touches three accounts, write one compound entry. Splitting it into three simple entries changes the meaning and usually leaves one of them unbalanced.

Narration, Dr. and To, and one entry per transaction: get these right and the journal questions are easy marks.

Which ledger and trial balance errors cost marks?

In a ledger account, the debit side entries start with "To" and the credit side entries with "By". The name you write is the other account in the entry, not the account you are in. Writing "To Cash" in the Cash Account itself is the most common slip I see.

Then balance the account. Write "By Balance c/d" on the shorter side, total both sides, and bring the balance down as "To Balance b/d" on the next date. Many students stop at the totals. If the question asks for ledger accounts, an unbalanced account is incomplete.

For the trial balance, show both column totals. If they do not agree and the question tells you to, open a Suspense Account for the difference rather than forcing a figure.

Post the other account's name, balance every account, and total both columns of the trial balance.

How do students get closing stock wrong in final accounts?

Closing stock is the format mistake that changes the profit. Take a sole trader with opening stock of Rs 40,000, purchases of Rs 2,00,000 and sales of Rs 3,00,000 in the trial balance. Closing stock of Rs 50,000 is given below the trial balance as an adjustment.

  • Trading Account, credit side: Sales Rs 3,00,000 and Closing stock Rs 50,000.
  • Debit side: Opening stock Rs 40,000 and Purchases Rs 2,00,000.
  • Gross profit: Rs 3,50,000 less Rs 2,40,000 = Rs 1,10,000.
  • Balance Sheet: Closing stock Rs 50,000 on the assets side.

A student who shows the stock only in the Balance Sheet gets a gross profit of Rs 60,000, and the Balance Sheet is out by Rs 50,000. The rule flips when closing stock already appears inside the trial balance. Then purchases have been adjusted, and the stock goes only to the Balance Sheet.

An adjustment outside the trial balance always goes to two places. An item inside it goes to one.

What is the right format for share forfeiture?

Say a company forfeits 1,000 shares of Rs 10 each, Rs 8 called up. The holder paid Rs 5 on application and allotment but did not pay the first call of Rs 3.

  • Share Capital A/c Dr. Rs 8,000 (the called-up amount).
  • To Share First Call A/c Rs 3,000 (the unpaid amount).
  • To Share Forfeiture A/c Rs 5,000 (the amount received).

The two errors I see are debiting Rs 10,000, the face value, and crediting the whole Rs 8,000 to Share Forfeiture. Both leave the entry unbalanced or wrong. Write a working note showing called-up, paid and unpaid amounts before the entry.

Debit what was called up, credit what is unpaid and what was received.

Which other formats need care?

Bank reconciliation statement

Write your starting point in the first line, for example "Balance as per Cash Book", and keep separate Add and Less sections. A cheque issued but not presented for payment is added when you start from the Cash Book balance. Students who mix the starting point reverse every sign.

Partnership capital accounts

Use columnar capital accounts, one column per partner. State whether capitals are fixed or fluctuating. With fixed capitals, interest on capital and drawings go to the partners' current accounts, not to the capital accounts.

Not-for-profit organisations

A Receipts and Payments Account is a summary of cash. An Income and Expenditure Account is on an accrual basis. Subscriptions outstanding or received in advance change the Income and Expenditure figure, not the Receipts and Payments figure.

In each of these, the first line of the format decides whether the rest is right.

How should you practise formats before January?

  1. Write one full set of formats from memory each week: journal, ledger, trial balance, Trading and Profit and Loss Account, Balance Sheet, capital accounts, BRS.
  2. Solve ICAI's mock test papers for Paper 1 under a three-hour timer.
  3. Mark your own copy against the suggested answer, line by line, looking only at format.
  4. List every format slip in one notebook and read it before each mock.
  5. Get at least one full paper checked by someone else before the exam.

Our chapter-wise weightage post shows which chapters carry the most marks, so you can pick the formats to practise first.

Weekly format drills plus timed mocks will clear most of these errors by December.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.Is narration compulsory in CA Foundation journal entries?

Ans.

Yes, write one under every entry unless the question says narrations are not required. It takes a few seconds. A student writing ten entries without narrations risks losing a little on each one.

Q2.Where does closing stock go in final accounts?

Ans.

If it is given as an adjustment, it goes to the credit side of the Trading Account and the assets side of the Balance Sheet. If it is already in the trial balance, it goes only to the Balance Sheet. With purchases of Rs 2,00,000 and stock of Rs 50,000 outside the trial balance, both entries are needed.

Q3.Which amount is debited to Share Capital on forfeiture?

Ans.

The called-up amount on the forfeited shares, not the face value. For 1,000 shares of Rs 10 with Rs 8 called up, debit Rs 8,000 even though the face value is Rs 10,000.

Q4.Do we need to balance ledger accounts in CA Foundation?

Ans.

Yes, when the question asks for ledger accounts. Write Balance c/d on the shorter side, total both sides and bring the balance down. Totals without a balance leave the account incomplete.

Q5.When is the CA Foundation Accounts paper in January 2027?

Ans.

Sunday 3 January 2027, from 2 PM to 5 PM. It is Paper 1 and opens the attempt, followed by Business Laws on 5 January.

Q6.How many marks do I need to pass CA Foundation Accounts?

Ans.

40 out of 100 in the paper, and 50% of the aggregate across all four papers. A student with 45 in Accounts still needs strong scores elsewhere to reach 200 out of 400.
