CA Articleship: Where You Learn More Than Your Entire School Life Combined
CA Articleship is the part of the CA journey where theory meets trauma, and you realise real life doesn’t come with suggested answers.
You start with a shiny backpack, a few pens, and dreams of working on big audits, only to find yourself labelling files in a freezing office while silently questioning all your life choices.
The Start: That Glorious First Day (Where You Just Stare at People and Pray for Wi-Fi)
Nobody warns you that your first task might involve installing Tally, fixing someone’s Excel sheet, or running to the bank for something called a 26AS which you’ve heard of but never seen in the wild.
You’re in this strange in-between phase – not quite a student, not quite an employee – just a very confused creature in formals, trying to figure out which cupboard the audit files live in.
And yes, there will be biscuits.
But not the good ones.
Always the ones no one likes.
What You Think You’ll Do During Articleship
Audit listed companies.
Sign papers with flair.
Explain GST to CEOs.
Maybe even travel in a corporate cab.
What actually happens?
You will spend hours staring at bank statements with 400 line items, hunting for a single missing invoice from a client who says “just check once more, it’s definitely there” even though it clearly is not.
What You’ll Really Learn (and Not Just from the Work)
You’ll learn more about real accounting and taxation in three months than you did in three years of classes because when your senior says “review this ledger and make a report by 6PM” – you do not argue, you just google faster.
Here’s where it gets real.
Audit
You learn to ask for documents clients never want to give, like it’s a daily treasure hunt where the only prize is a grumpy nod from your manager and maybe a sandwich if they’re feeling generous.
You get good at reading between the lines – both in numbers and in client excuses – and somehow, over time, it becomes second nature to spot errors, gaps, and suspicious journal entries that smell like “future scrutiny.”
Taxation
You’ll know the GST portal so well, it starts to feel like your second home, and you'll develop the psychic ability to predict when it’ll crash (usually right before a deadline).
And income tax returns?
You’ll be able to file them with your eyes half-closed.
Not because you're that good.
But because you'll have done it 47 times this month.
Office Life: A Whole Education on Its Own
CA Articleship also teaches you how to deal with real people in real offices who are stressed, overworked, and sometimes terrifying, but you'll also meet colleagues who turn into close friends, seniors who actually help, and clients who bring food during stock audits (bless them).
You’ll master the art of pretending to look busy when the partner walks in, how to fix a printer without crying, and how to write emails that sound professional even when you're begging someone to respond to your 7th follow-up.
The real flex?
Drinking tea in a glass tumbler and still finishing a full GST reconciliation before lunch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1.When should I start my articleship?
After passing Group 1 of IPCC or Intermediate, you can register and start.
Q2.Should I choose a Big 4 or a mid-sized firm?
Big 4 gives brand and structure, mid-sized gives you hands-on work. Choose what fits your learning style (and stress tolerance).
Q3.Can I take transfer during articleship?
You can – within the first year freely, after that only with genuine reasons and lots of forms. It’s like switching Hogwarts houses mid-year.

For the Intermediate (IPCC) and Final levels, on the other hand, candidates have an endless number of chances to pass, giving them more options. The goal of these try limits is to find a good mix between making sure that people finish the course on time and giving them a chance to do well.
What is the CA Attempt Limit
The CA attempt limit means the number of attempts an aspirant is allowed towards clearing an exam under the CA course. By this, ICAI has set a limit to the number of attempts allowed for a candidate in each level of the CA examination. Aside from certain number of attempts allowed, a student who did not pass the exam may encounter limitations on pursuing the course.
The number of attempts depends on the type of the examination-
● CA Foundation (CPT)- A candidate is allowed to write the papers up to a maximum of six times. This means that, irrespective of passing the first attempt, students can sit for the Foundation exam up to six attempts. Suppose the student fails to pass the Foundation exam, subsequent to appearing at the maximum of six times. In that case, the student is not allowed to sit for any subsequent Intermediate or Final examinations and ceases the course.
● CA Intermediate- CA examination has fifteen subjects for Intermediate level and a student can appear for maximum nine times on both Group I and Group II together. In case they fail to produce passing scores in this number of attempts then they cannot proceed to the Final level and this can lead to cancellation of registration.
● CA Final- The number of attempts that are allowed in the CA Final exam is also nine. When any student makes unsuccessful attempts to clear the exam for a total of nine times, he or she has to undergo certain pre-requisites known as re-registration.
